Yoga Therapy for Spine and Pelvis: A Synthesis of East & West for Structure and Function

Instructors:

  • Bill Gallagher PT, CMT, CYT
  • Richard Sabel MA, MPH, OTR, GCFP

Neck, back and pelvic pain are common complaints that lead many people to try Yoga. Spinal and pelvic health is supported by three factors that can be likened to the legs of a stool: Strength, flexibility and awareness. If one leg is wobbly, the other one may compensate to support the load. This compensation can be draining in a way that leads to pain and disability.

This workshop will shed light on key anatomy (structure), kinesiology (function) and common disorders on the spine and pelvis. After laying the foundations, participants will learn to integrate both structure “how the arrangement and organization of the parts relate to one another” and function “how we can use the structure more efficiently and more gently.”

Sometimes neck, back and pelvic pain can be caused by structural restrictions/instabilities and habits of movement that reinforce or create the structural issue or issues. This course will help you use Hatha Yoga, pranayama, Raja Yoga, rooting/stabilization techniques from qigong and Feldenkrais inspired practice to confidently and efficiently serve people with spinal and pelvic pain.
